Brand Overview
Under the direction of Tim Waterstone, the founder, Waterstones first opened in 1982. Employing over 3000 outstanding booksellers in over 300 bookshops, they have evolved over the years into an emblem of the British cultural scene.
Under the direction of Managing Director James Daunt, the last surviving national bookshop chain is pleased to have resisted the apparent threat of e-readers and internet competition in order to start a strategy of active development. New stores have opened up all throughout the nation and locations either change or been renovated in recent years. Their plans remain ambitious, with new openings including Reigate, Clifton and transfers to significantly more appealing sites for their stores in Edinburgh and Trafford Centre.
Unlike other national stores, Waterstones branch managers have a great degree of personal liberty and run their stores to best suit their local consumers with just the most minimal headquarters suggested guidance. Championing simply good (but occasionally underappreciated) novels brings great delight for them; this idea started most famously with John Williams’s Stoner, a quiet, absorbing novel that Waterstones made into a bestseller forty years after it was first published.
Working closely with Waterstones bookshops, their efforts online at Waterstones.com are aimed at bringing the very core of Waterstones to every British house and smartphone. Waterstones.com is the ideal online friend for their High Street retailers with immensely successful efforts like their regular reading update Waterstones Weekly and an always growing range of signed editions. Linking the two, Click & Collect has expanded in line with their success to let their clients enjoy the best of both worlds. Waterstones invite you to Waterstones via their own coffee cafes, selection of books, assortment of gifts and booksellers that really like what they offer.
